Why Is My Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working?

Your refrigerator water dispenser is a pretty luxurious piece of equipment that may not constitute an emergency if it doesn't work, but it will certainly put a damper on things for you. And it could be a sign of a larger issue you need to tackle with your refrigerator. You should start taking a look as soon as you notice the issue and be prepared to call a professional for help.

The water dispenser may look sleek and like it functions seamlessly, but it actually uses pretty robust technology to keep it going. And a problem in any one part of the machine could result in water not coming out. Troubleshooting the issue can be tricky, since most of the components are inside the machine, but there are things you can do to start poking around.

A frozen water line

This problem is common for refrigerator units where the doors are side by side. The water dispenser's water supply line is usually fitted right against the freezer, which can mean it's subject to freezing or frost buildup that results in a clog. You can try and troubleshoot this by turning the freezer's temperature up to make sure it is not too cold. Check your thermostat to make sure it's registering temperatures properly. If that doesn't thaw the freeze, you'll need to call a professional for help.

Water pressure problem

It's possible a water dispenser that doesn't work is simply a symptom of a much larger problem in your overall plumbing. Check to see if other water-dispensing appliances in your home are not working. You may be dealing with a loss of water pressure because of a problem in your home's plumbing system or a problem with the public water line your home sources water from. Take a look around and see if this isn't a sign of a larger plumbing issue in your home.

Clogged filter

Your water line uses a filter to provide you with clean drinking water and ice. But this filter, like a filter in any appliance, needs to be maintained and regularly cleaned or replaced. If you don't do this, the debris it starts to accumulate may eventually clog the water line and keep water from reaching the dispenser. Take a look at the filter and see if it needs to be cleaned or replaced. This is something pretty easy to do yourself, but it's possible the clog issue has led to bacterial buildup that should be professionally cleaned.
